iPhone technology comes to the PC

HP has launched its first multi-touch laptop, the TouchSmart tx2, which allows full touch-screen control on the desktop.

The technology, which is similar to that used in the iPhone and other handheld devices, has been provided by Israeli software firm N-Trig.

Microsoft has said that it will not be introducing the technology to Windows until at least Windows 7, due for release in 2010.

"Breezing through websites and enjoying photos or video at the tap, whisk or flick of a finger is an entirely new way to enjoy digital content on a notebook PC," said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager of HP's Notebook Global Business Unit.

"With the introduction of the TouchSmart tx2, HP is providing users with an easier, more natural way to interact with their PCs, and furthering touch innovation."

The fingertip controls allow users to move objects around the screen, shrink or expand them and open and close applications by tapping. It also comes with a pen controller to supplement the mouse and keyboard.

The 12.1in notebook has a hinged screen that allows it to be used as a laptop and is available with Windows Vista and a range of AMD dual-core Turion processors. The base specification starting price is $1,149 (£774).
